A photo gift is a safe choice: it is personal, and you don’t have to guess anyone’s size or taste. But ‘with a photo’ covers very different things these days — a mug, a cushion, a photo book, a canvas print, a jigsaw puzzle, a 3D-printed figure, a brick figure, a frame with figures or a keyring. They differ in the effect they have when unwrapped, in how long they last and in whether they can cope with an ordinary, not-very-sharp phone photo. We compared them against five criteria, and at the end we suggest what to choose for a specific occasion.
This guide was written by the Kloniko team — we make figures from photos out of genuine LEGO® elements and frames with figures, so you will find our products here too. We describe them alongside other ideas, because a figure is not the best choice for every occasion. We do not give prices — they depend on the maker and change often.
Five criteria for comparison
- The ‘wow’ factor. Whether the gift gets a reaction when it is unwrapped and whether the recipient will show it to others.
- Durability. Whether it will still bring joy a year later, or fade, wear off in the wash or end up in a drawer.
- A poor photo. Whether an ordinary phone photo is enough — even an old, dark one or one taken from a distance — or whether you need a sharp, high-resolution shot.
- Preparation time. How much work is on your side and how long you have to wait for the finished gift.
- Who it is for and for what occasion. A small token for lots of people is something different from a gift for an anniversary or a farewell at work.
Comparison table
| Gift | ‘Wow’ factor | Durability | Poor photo | Your work | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Photo mug | low | moderate — the print can wear off with frequent washing | poor — the whole photo is visible | minimal | a small token |
| Cushion | moderate | moderate — the fabric and print wear out in the wash | poor | minimal | a child, grandma |
| Photo puzzle | moderate — an evening’s entertainment | once completed, it usually goes back in the box | poor | minimal | a family evening |
| Photo book | high, when it tells a story | high | average — a weak photo gets lost among the others | a lot: choosing photos, layout, captions | an anniversary, grandparents, a year in review |
| Canvas print, poster | moderate | high | bad — a large format shows every blur | low | a new home, a couple |
| 3D-printed figure | high | fragile, a single solid piece | depends on the studio — clear photos are usually needed | moderate | when facial detail matters |
| Brick figure from a photo | high | high — it stands on a shelf, with nothing to wash | good — what counts is the hairstyle, hair colour and style | low | birthdays, a colleague, a child aged 3+ |
| Frame with figures | very high | high — it hangs on the wall | good | low | a couple, a family, a wedding, an anniversary, a team |
| Keyring with a figure | moderate | in everyday use, on keys or a backpack | good | low | a small gift, a couple, a schoolchild |
Mug, cushion and puzzle — quick, but short-lived
These are the simplest photo gifts: you upload a file and the print shop does the rest. They work as a small token or as an add-on to a bigger gift, when you need to give something to lots of people at once. They do have two weaknesses, though. First, the whole photo is visible on them, so a dark or blurry shot is immediately noticeable. Second, they are everyday items — the mug goes in the dishwasher, the cushion in the washing machine — and over time the print loses its colours. A puzzle makes for an evening together, but once completed it usually goes back in the box.
When to choose: when the gift is meant to be small and it is the gesture that counts, not a keepsake for years.
Photo book and canvas print — when you have good photos
A photo book is the best way to gather a whole story: a year in a couple’s life, a grandchild’s childhood, trips taken together. It takes the most work — choosing photos, laying out the pages and writing captions can take several evenings — but the result is lasting and very personal. One weaker photo does not matter, because it gets lost among the others.
A canvas print or poster is the opposite: one photo in a large format. It looks great if the shot is sharp and well lit — with a poor photo, enlargement will mercilessly reveal every blur. It suits a new home or a couple who have one favourite photo.
Figures: 3D-printed, brick, in a frame and on a keyring
A figure is no longer a picture of a person but an object: you pick it up, stand it on your monitor, carry it on your keys. That is why it ends up in a cupboard less often than a mug or a card.
A 3D-printed figure can capture the most facial detail, but it is a single, fragile piece — you cannot change the hairstyle or add accessories, and the photo requirements depend on the studio.
A brick figure from a photo works differently: the likeness comes from the whole look — hairstyle, hair and skin colour, glasses, beard, clothes and a small item in hand. It is brick style rather than a photographic portrait, but in return the photo does not have to be perfect. At Kloniko we look at the hairstyle, hair colour and overall style, not at sharpness; if the shot is dark or taken from a distance, one extra photo is usually enough, even an old one, and for a surprise — a photo from social media. We assemble the figure from genuine LEGO® elements and complete it with our own printing. It is about 4 cm tall and arrives assembled, in gift packaging.
A frame with figures has the strongest effect in this line-up when there are several people: a couple, a family with a dog, a whole team. The background can hold names, a date, wishes or a photo of a special place. Standard frames range from 13×18 to 40×50 cm, and the largest holds as many as 50 figures. A keyring is the same figure with a carabiner — good as a smaller gift or for a schoolchild’s backpack.
There is little work on your side: you build the figure yourself in the creator or send a photo to a designer — at no extra cost. Before production you receive the design for approval, and corrections are free and unlimited. Agreeing the design is what takes the most time; after your ‘yes’ we usually ship the next working day, and delivery takes 1–3 working days within Poland and 2–6 working days elsewhere in the EU (other countries: cost confirmed before dispatch). One limitation worth remembering: the figures have small parts, so they are not suitable for children under 3.
What to choose for a specific occasion
- A small token for lots of people — a mug or a keyring with a figure.
- A loved one’s birthday — a figure holding their favourite hobby, or a photo book of the whole year. Ideas: birthday gift.
- An anniversary, a couple, a wedding — a frame with two figures and a date, or a photo book of your years together.
- Grandparents — a photo book with the grandchildren, or a family frame in which they stand together with them. More: what to give grandma and grandpa.
- A child — from age 3, a figure ‘just like me’; for younger children, a cushion or a puzzle with large pieces is a better choice. See gift for a child.
- A new home — a canvas print of a favourite, sharp photo.
- A colleague, a boss, a whole team — a figure holding something from their work, or a frame with the team’s signatures. For companies: corporate gifts.
Frequently asked questions
Which photo gift should I choose if I only have a poor photo?
One that does not enlarge the photo. In a photo book a weaker shot gets lost among the others, and with a brick figure what counts is the hairstyle, hair colour and style, not sharpness. A poster, a canvas and a mug will show every flaw in the photo.
Which photo gift lasts longest?
The ones that are not used every day: a photo book, a canvas, a figure on a shelf and a frame with figures on the wall. A mug and a cushion are practical, but they wear out with washing up and laundering.
Will a figure from a photo look like the photo?
Not like a photograph — it is brick style. You recognise the person by their hairstyle, colours, glasses, beard, clothes and small details. How to prepare a photo and what to choose is covered in our guide how to make a figure from a photo, and the differences between bricks, 3D printing and an AI avatar — in the article brick figure, 3D print or AI avatar.
